What Real Wolves (revised) by kelleybean86 What Real Wolves (revised) by kelleybean86
This was supposed to be a serious illustration, but now I'm afraid that the wolf in a suit just looks funny or silly. What do you think?

UPDATED: Thanks everyone for your great feedback. I think it really helped beef up the wolf. Scary things are not my forte, so I appreciate the extra help!

If you intended to make the sexual predator intimidating/scary then your biggest mistake was his posture. Make him bent over the girl and the image will be read more easily. The posture is the first thing people notice and analyze. Nails (claws) are the last.

The way it is now it's just a stand-up guy in a suit... oh wait, he's a wolf? What? At this point viewer is lost in the dychotomy and the picture should be read instantly the correct way.

No issue with the suit, but I think the wolf's face isn't very scary

Well, the original story is about being foolish in trusting strangers…so it would make more sense if the girl looked more like participant. After all, it isn't really a caution against molestation or rape. Its a caution against falling for seduction. Little girls this seems to say, never  stop upon your way. Never trust a stranger-friend, you don't know where it will end. As you're pretty so be wise. Wolves may lurk in any guise. Now, as then 'tis simple truth; Sweetest tongue hides sharpest tooth.

But yes, it looks silly. Perhaps if you had used a feral looking human guy, with some wolf  aspects, it could work. But a human body with a wolf head? SRSLY? And the girl should look like she trusts him unwisely. Not like some street urchin that is trying to pick his pocket.  I mean i get that you meant for him to be a pedophile, but it doesn't impress me as serious. Its kind of like those "this is your brain on drugs" commercial where people laugh more then give serious pause to the issue.

I love seeing modern interpretations of fairy tales, you did such a great job portraying what this would actually look like.
Many artists choose depict Little Red as a promiscuous teen so I'm glad you showed this side of the fairytale.

I could say it looks more surreal than silly, though the two often intersect.

if you're afraid it's too caricature-ish you could maybe make the wolf more human...just hairy - hairy hands and knuckles, scruffy and unkempt facial hair.  Maybe his smile is cruel and salacious and he has yellow-black-wolf eyes?  something a bit more subtle...since most wolves we know are hard to spot, and rarely reveal their true nature?

well the girl looks scared enough without the bad wolf being anymore vicious...so...one idea would be to close his mouth (maybe, I'm no expert!)

Very interesting piece.  Wish I could have compared before and after, but it certainly looks good now.  I think the girl's pose conveys the sinister tone even better than the "werewolf."

As others have said before me, the girl's expression is just great. I also really like the shadow of the tree being cast over them. To me the piece seems like a metaphor for child abuse and how the fear of the abuser keeps the child trapped perpetually with him/her.

Also like some of the others, I feel that the problem isn't the wolf but that it's not rendered to the same level as the other elements. The hands and face both feel a little flat tonally and the center hand (his right hand) seems strangely drawn as well, like it's not referenced as much as the other elements. This is a bit of a nitpick but there are a couple of shadows on her shirt that I think could be blended a little better, particularly the two on the bottom (under her hands), but on the sleeves as well. I guess that's more of a stylistic choice, but the roughness of those brush strokes feels a little inconsistent to me when compared with the subtle rendering of the face.

Anyway, great piece, I love the subtlety of the subject. It's quiet but suggestive and very well composed. Great work!

I have a meaning in mind, but I'm not sure whether I'd like to state it. What meaning do you get from it?
Reply
:iconselfproclaimedpariah:
Truth be told, I'm not sure what meaning, for me, it holds. I had read the top comments before being able to give any proper thought to it. And while I won't press you for an answer to my question, I must say, I'm having difficulty reasoning what meaning it holds for me; for you see, whatever meaning you hold for it, is what dominates me thoughts when I look at it. If you would like, I shall make a greater attempt to find a meaning that suits it and me (or perhaps just me; since whatever I might come up with may no match your meaning). I apologize for how wordy all that was; it feels like a bit of a mouthful to me.

I agree with the above – more pressure from the claws (and maybe a bit more fur on the hands) and some darker shadows, perhaps bringing out some highlights on those scary teeth. It certainly doesn't look funny or silly, but I know what you mean, sometimes you just want a bit more drama, and can't quite replicate what you can see in your head... I might actually be inclined to have the wolf's head looking towards the girl a bit more, which might help with the muzzle as well, since they're always tricky to draw front-on. But the girl's body language is fantastic and I love the red of her jacket against all those cold tones, too. =)

Getting drama can be really hard. When I was at uni, a huge percentage of assignments were modern science fiction, sometimes bordering on horror, which just wasn't my style at all and practically every picture I did was wholly devoid of drama. =P Since then I've been working on improving that, but it's always a bit of a struggle...
I'm glad I was helpful! =)

I think it would lose some of the 'silly look' if you maybe lowered his head a bit more and broaden out the shoulders, so that it looks more like a beast like animal is wearing the suit and less like a wolf head placed on top of a man's body.
Otherwise this is fantastic. I really like the tension that it holds, which is especially well conveyed through the emotion from the girl's expression, the downward turn of her head, and the proximity of those claws to her face. For some reason too, her age and stature in contrast to the lightly possessive hold of the wolf works really well.
In short this is great! Well done.

Sort of agree, but I think it's important that we not see its/his eyes. Really important.

Otherwise, definitely not a silly image.

I think it looks serious, bordering on scary, as it is. However; if you want to up the pressure a bit, what would happen if you increased the pressure of his claws on her sweatshirt, just enough to dimple the fabric?

it's definitely got a serious feel it, but if you think it looks silly maybe make the wolf darker looking? darker fur, most intense shadows or sharper features perhaps?
