For the past few weeks I've been trying to create "portfolio pieces" or other things to impress professors, publishers and people. And it was no fun. Nothing was turning out well. Finally I just said, "screw this, I'm going to draw whatever I want." And apparently what I want to draw is Tia Dalma from Pirates of the Caribbean. Who knew?

Tia Dalma is a fascinating character. I love her mischievous smile, you've captured it excellently! The neutral tones and the subtle reds and oranges in this piece work very well together.

Creating a portfolio for the sake of impressing professors or potential employers is no fun at all. It takes the life and energy out of the work, in my experience, and leaves you dry and wondering why you're doing art in the first place. To get accolade? To get a job? What happened to drawing or painting simply because you love what you do? These were the things floating around my head during my BFA year in my university's traditional fine arts program, and are questions I still have to ask myself every time I pick up a pencil.

I agree that it's important to always have fun while drawing. There's no point if you're not having fun.
