Busyness and Inspiration by kelleybean86 Busyness and Inspiration by kelleybean86
I started thinking about the challenges of doing creative work as a career. The biggest challenge, in my opinion, is to keep the creative spark alive while also meeting deadlines. While struggling with less-than-awesome material. While waiting for that overdue paycheck to show up. While wondering if I'm going to have work next month. While viewing the work of other artists who are more successful and talented than I.

I wanted to illustrate that tension by representing inspiration as a fragile butterfly, and busyness as a cascade of everyday objects - things that represent time, money, distractions and responsibilities. (The Imogen Heap lyric "the many windswept yellow stickies of my mind" kept coming to mind.)

This is really good! It does not only show the challenges of doing creative work as a career; it also shows how hard it is to keep the creative spark alive for hobby artists, if they have too many other tasks to do.

Fabulous work, as always, and so true. Sometimes I feel like I am drowning in everything I have to do, ought to do and need to do and I just have to take a bit of time out to recharge by ignoring all that and doing something I want to do (I've just done so, in fact!) and you've captured that beautifully. =)

One of the things I really love about your work is the lack of excessive non-sense. I know you use layers and some textures, but none of it is obvious or flashy and all contributes to the unity of the drawing. So much stuff on DA is just a collection of textures, filters, and layer manipulation, seeing something that focuses on the drawing is refreshing. Took me a while to figure out what it was that always made me smile when I see your work, and I think that is a major part of it.

I think that "excessive nonsense" is people hoping that digital painting can do the work of drawing for them. Thinking that they can use a tree texture instead of learning how to draw trees, for example, or drop in a mountain photo rather than learning how to draw mountains.

I use plenty of digital shortcuts, but the majority of my time is spent just drawing all the things! :)

I submit on reddit in a sub that pairs people who draw with people who want to be drawn. One of the things I hear alot there is everything is acceptable. This includes filters, textures, tracing, photo manipulation, the works. While I understand the whole "art is what you make of it" thing, for some reason it just bothers me. It's like "Do you think you are going to get better doing those things?" Idk, I try to fight that urge when I can, as I know alot of it is just my silly biases getting the better of me. Anywho, thats why I follow you (and a few others :) on here, it kind of counteracts the bad mojo I accrue else where.

I think everything is acceptable if you're just looking to have fun. But it's obvious when people use shortcuts; a Photoshop filter applied to a photograph isn't the same thing at all as a portrait painted by someone who knows how to draw. And people can easily tell the difference.

Amazing, I love the idea behind it, and the way you've drawn it, with the single light source in the centre. Beautiful

You really put a lot of work into the papers and surroundings. They're like little Easter Eggs with some of the being very important and pivotal.

it's what I do! If an artist devotes hours to putting in the details to create a flawless, and united piece, then the least I can do is notice it all!
